Program Synopsis
“Ride On” is a two-act play presenting an analogy of how the historic Stax Records company influenced the aspirations of the African American community in Memphis, Tennessee. Set in the fall of 1976, the story centers upon the dreams of three junior high school students, Alan, Anthony and Marc who are hoping to get mini-bikes for Christmas. Neighbors and classmates in junior high school, the boys have been raised to reflect the post-civil rights motto “Unity in the Community” and have agreed that if one child cannot get a mini-bike, none will. The dramatic arc and resolution is built upon the decision of Alan’s mother, a strong and hardworking single mother whose live-in fiancee, Jenks, is a recording engineer at Stax. Pregnant with the couple’s first child, they are planning on getting married after she attains her nursing degree. These events are being planned to culminate in the holiday season, but the shocking news of Stax’s immediate closing comes in the first act, with the second act resolving the family’s future and the boys’ dreams.
